The People’s Palace

This multi-purpose visitor experience was designed as a permanent feature of Alexandra Palace’s new East Court development, part of the East Wing Restoration Project. The 7.2m tower reflects the architectural heritage of the space and was developed to house an interpreted history of Alexandra Palace; its rich cross arts and cultural heritage and historical importance.

Conceptually the structure appears to break open to reveal Ally Pally’s eclectic interior incorporating original theatre lights and back stage lighting decks and ropes used by the theatre with which it connects. With access to an amazing archive of film and imagery we were able to playfully reflect how the latest entertainments of the day drew enormous crowds and were celebrated on a grand scale. A giant periscope was also included as a fun participatory element.

Working closely with collaborative partners Factory Settings we developed a modular system of interchangeable units and replaceable graphics to ensure its future potential remains as flexible for the team as possible.

The East Court restoration project received the RIBA London Award 2019, RIBA London Conservation Award 2019 and RIBA National Award 2019.
