Northover&Brown are proud to have recently led the graphic design for the National Museum of Ireland’s Changing Ireland permanent galleries, marking their biggest expansion of public spaces in over two decades. Designed to accommodate regular changes in display, we helped support the narrative of hundreds of political, social and cultural objects from the Museum’s 20th and 21st Century Collections.
With the historical narrative of the galleries beginning in the early 20th century we worked with the Dublin based traditional letterpress studio One Strong Arm to produce prints from original late 19th century woodcut letters, used in the production of some of the exhibition’s original content, including the 1916 Proclamation. These printed type sheets informed the distressed steel titling.
Working with an extensive multi-disciplinary team for over three years we created a robust and flexible graphic design hierarchy to work across the gallery. We collaborated with Drinkall Dean from the beginning to develop a sustainable strategy for in-case labelling, ensuring that the English and Irish languages are easily identifiable, clear and accessible.
