Hokusai beyond the Great Wave

The first exhibition in the UK to focus on Katsushika Hokusai’s later years when he produced some of his most famous masterpieces.

It focuses on the last three decades of Hokusai’s life, from the age of 60 (the beginning of a second life according to Japanese tradition) to his death at almost 90. Thirty six views of Mount Fuji began with the woodblock print of The Great Wave of 1831 when Hokusai was already 70. This famous work headed up a display of superb landscapes including intimate domestic imagery, depictions of the natural world and Hokusai’s portrayals of supernatural entities. Items were loaned by institutions from across the globe and many were seen together for the first time.
