Sound Lounge

Commissioned to design a welcoming and inclusive library for Bristol Beacon’s entrance hall we transformed an existing storage cupboard into a community focused space with a mobile library that celebrates the venue’s social and musical history.

A comfortable place to pause, the Sound Lounge encourages visitors to sit, browse and explore a variety of content; books, audio and video including the latest collaborations with the local community can be easily accessed. The design incorporates a bespoke LED neon-style sign and uses archive material that reveals the eclectic and diverse range of musicians, artists and personalities who have performed at the venue.

The mobile library juxtaposes space for books with panelised imagery that can be removed and updated whenever required. The unit can be wheeled into position and opened up during the day for browsing and, when not in use, folded away to comfortably nest inside the cupboard space which in turn offers storage for additional books and seating.

The project was commissioned by Cathy Mager and was a collaboration with artist Kristina Veasey who designed the textile patterns (used on the seating upholstery and incorporated into the unit) and Rich White who fabricated the furniture.
