The Illustration Game: Sketches from the Archives

Housed in an original WWII hut, we designed this family oriented exhibition to showcase rare and previously unseen artworks from the Bletchley archive that reveal the human side to life there and at its outstations during the second world war.

We wanted to encourage the visitor to imaginatively engage with the stories and designed a series of low tech, birch ply interactive games to create tactile engagement through play. Visitors were invited to design their own amphibious vehicle, choose items to take on a night watch and compete in a Dispatch Rider race board game, watch out for that snow drift lads!

A rare sketch of The Women of Hut 4 by codebreaker Penelope Bishop formed the basis for two large hand painted murals at either end of the space, playfully bringing the characters to life. A drawing station encouraged visitors to spend time reflecting and then creating their own piece of work to share on the wall.
